Manufacturing in Saskatchewan

In the broadest sense of the term “manufacturing” includes the use of machines, tools and labour to make things for use or sale. The concept of adding value to a raw material is also a factor in the manufacturing process.

Key manufacturing clusters in the Province of Saskatchewan include machinery, transportation and industrial equipment; food, crop and beverage processing; wood products; and chemical manufacturing. Emerging clusters include aerospace and defence, automotive accessories, and electronics and instrumentation.

Manufacturers have achieved many world firsts – in everything from satellite communications technology to dry land farming equipment to roadside scales for the trucking industry.

  • The provincial corporate income tax rate for manufacturing profits is as low as 10%.

  • The province exports approximately 75% of what is manufactured.

  • According to Saskatchewan Trade & Export Partnership (STEP), in 2008, the industry generated 7.8% of the province’s real Gross Domestic Product and $12.2 billion in manufacturing shipments.

  • In 2009, there were approximately 28,500 employed in the industry. Approximately 50% of the jobs in 2009 were in machinery manufacturing, fabricated metal products, and food.

  • Nearly a third of Saskatchewan's manufacturing takes place outside its two largest cities, representing a well-dispersed industrial base.

Manufacturing in Southeast Saskatchewan

  • According to Saskatchewan South East Enterprise Region Inc. (SSEER), southeast Saskatchewan has approximately 57 manufacturers: 27 in the manufacture of tools, implements and equipment, ten in the manufacture of primary industry materials, nine in food and agriculture, seven in retail products,  and four in woodcraft.

  • Predominant types of manufacturing in southeast Saskatchewan include: agricultural machinery, prefab buildings and building materials, consumers goods, and products relating to the mining and oil and gas sectors.

  • Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada (AWMAC) has as its primary objective to promote the interests of persons, firms and corporations engaged in the business of manufacturing, supplying and/or installing Architectural Wood Products in Canada.

  • Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) advocates for manufacturers and exporters. Its focuses include building a more competitive business environment providing critical and timely intelligence and strengthening leadership through best practices and leveraging networks for business success.

  • Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA) is a membership driven advocacy organization dedicated to the growth of plastics businesses and helping the industry reach its full potential.

  • Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) is committed to the sustainable success of a strong and internationally competitive Canadian steel sector. Member companies seek to advance policies to advance our competitiveness, innovation, environmental performance, skilled and productive workforce, and community responsibility.

  • Manufacturing Safety Association of Saskatchewan Inc. (MSAS) was established to assist in the reduction of human and financial loss within the manufacturing industry. MSAS is an industry funded association that receives a portion of the premiums paid by the Manufacturing employers in Saskatchewan which are paid to WCB.

  • Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI) Based in Humbolt, Saskatchewan, PAMI conducts applied research, development and testing of equipment for industry applications. Services provided primarily to the manufacturing and agricultural sectors

  • Prairie Implement Manufacturers Association (PIMA) has a mandate to provide programs and activities that inform, educate, and transfer skills to Canadian manufacturers. Contact PIMA at (306) 522-2710.

  • Saskatchewan Lean Consortia (a CME initiative) Membership-based, the CME LEAN consortium helps companies accelerate productivity improvements by taking advantage of the knowledge and expertise that exists with member businesses.

  • Saskatchewan Manufacturers Guide provides an on-line searchable database of provincial manufacturing companies.

  • Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP) is a public-private partnership led by industry. Established as a non-profit corporation in 1996 by the Province of Saskatchewan, STEP works in partnership with Saskatchewan businesses to maximize commercial success in global ventures. STEP can assist member manufacturers in developing export solutions and market intelligence.
